Name the important data.

Identify the information you cannot easily recreate. Include configuration and the instructions needed to make that information useful again.

Define the recovery goal.

Decide how much recent work can be lost and how long recovery can take. These objectives guide how frequently copies are made and where they are kept.

Keep copies independent.

Avoid relying on one machine or one set of credentials for both the working system and every recovery copy. Think about what happens if either one becomes unavailable.

Restore and check.

Exercise the restore process. Confirm that the recovered service can use its data, and note any manual steps that should become clearer next time.
